Osterhaus (family name)
Osterhaus is a German family name .
Origin and meaning
The name Osterhaus may come from the Lower Saxony area ( Steinfeld , Vechta district ) and North Rhine-Westphalia . Signs of this are provided by old documents in which a division of a farm or house is written. There were e.g. B. a courtyard "Osterhaus", which was divided into a large Easter house and a small Easter house by manorial division. At the same time there was Westhaus and Osthaus in other areas. The name "Osterhaus" also reflects the location of the courtyard: courtyard in the east or west of a region or place.
Another option is to change one's word. The former Hus became home. There are old death certificates with Osterhus or Osterhuss, Oisterhus, Osterhuis, Osterhusen and also Osterhues.
Many of the bearers of the name with "Osterhaus" in the United States are descendants of emigrants from Holthausen who emigrated to the United States around 1830-1850.
