The East Greenland reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus eogroenlandicus ) is an extinct subspecies of the reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus ) that was found in eastern Greenland since around 1900 . The subspecies is closely related to the Peary caribou , which both probably developed in the high Arctic North America . The East Greenland reindeer, like the Peary caribou and the Svalbard reindeer , have a smaller body size, shorter legs, a shorter snout and lighter and longer winter fur compared to the other subspecies .
