Otter (ship type)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From the beginning of the 17th century, an inland cargo ship on the rivers of today's Belgium was referred to as the otter . The ship was about 18 meters long, five meters wide and had a water displacement of about 100 tons. The wooden vehicles were one- or one-and-a-half masters with gaff sails . The ships were built like the Tjalken or Pleits . This type of ship was still used on numerous Belgian and Dutch rivers at the beginning of the 20th century .
