The oldest traces of settlement can be traced back to around 300 AD. The square has been continuously inhabited for over 400 years and was first mentioned in writing in 1522. Otternes originally consisted of four farms: Tomasgarden, Guttormgarden, Oddagarden and Andersgarden. About 30 people lived on these. All the houses in the court had their own function. In addition to the residential houses, barns and stables, a store house, a barn, which was used to store food, and a bakery have been preserved. The oldest surviving buildings, Guttormstova and Eilertstova, were built around 1700. Around 1860 Otternes received one last farm building, the only one that contained several functions. The two remaining farms were traditionally managed until 1970. Otternes mainly farmed crops, but there were also hay meadows by the fjord and on the slope behind the farm. The land reform of 1860 has not been applied in Otternes and so the form could strip fields receive up 1987th In Otternes hardly any modernizations were carried out in the post-war period and many buildings look like they were from the 18th century. In addition, the cultural landscape of hills, fountains, walls and stairs is intact.

In 1989 Otternes was converted into a working museum, and Otternes has been uninhabited since 1996. Due to its historical appearance, it was chosen as a location for several film productions.

In 2001 Otternes was taken over by Aurland Natur- og Kulturarv BA (ANKA) and since then has been run by Laila Kvellestad together with Ruth Sylvi as a private company as an agricultural museum and center for old handicrafts. In it, traditional techniques such as spinning, weaving, yarn dyeing, baking, and beer brewing are carried out and demonstrated in the summer months.
