Ouazebas

Coin of Ouazebas

Ouazebas was a king of Aksum who ruled in the late 4th century AD.

Ouazebas is only known from its coins. Some of them were found under the largest of the steles in Axum, and it has therefore been suggested that it overturned under Ouazebas. The motto TOYTOAPECHTHXWPA - "May this please the people" - also appears on its coins. This wish also appears on coins from Ezana . Some of his coins are partially gold-plated, which is a typical feature of axumite coins. This does not seem to have happened to give them a higher value, but perhaps to ennoble the image of the ruler.
