Overture Comique

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ouverture Comique is a composition by Johann Strauss Sohn (without opus number). It was probably first performed in Vienna in 1845.

Remarks

The work poses some riddles. It was probably created in 1845. Some newspaper reports from the time suggest this. An opus number was also not assigned for unknown reasons. The composition then apparently disappeared until it was dug up again in 1892 by Eduard Strauss and performed again. However, the work was not able to assert itself in 1892 either and disappeared again in the archives of the Strauss Chapel. In 1907 it was destroyed by Eduard Strauss along with the entire archive of the chapel. The CD recording mentioned below was re-orchestrated by Christian Pollack on the basis of an arrangement kept in the Vienna City and State Library.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 7 minutes and 18 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
