Owen de la Pole

Owen de la Pole (also Owain ap Gruffydd ap Wenwynwyn ) (* after 1241; † 1293 ) was a Welsh nobleman.

Owen de la Pole was Owain ap Gruffydd, the eldest son of Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn and his wife Hawise Lestrange. His father was Lord of the Welsh dominion Powys Wenwynwyn . Because of his opposition to Prince Llywelyn of Wales , he had to hold his eldest son Owen hostage in 1274. After the English conquest of Wales in 1283, his father was one of the few English allies to retain his rule as Marcher Lord under the law of the Welsh Marches . Owen himself served as the Knight Banneret in the household of the English king, which was very unusual for a Welshman at the time. After the death of his father, he took over the rule in Powys Wenwynwyn around 1287. Allegedly he is said to have handed over his rule to King Edward I , who then returned it to him as a fief . However, there is no evidence of this. However, Owen continued the conversion of Welsh rule into a feudal barony, which his father had begun, with the main town of Welshpool . He also dropped his traditional Welsh name and named himself after Welshpool, near whose residence Powis Castle was.

Owen married the English noblewoman Joan Corbet , a daughter of Sir Robert Corbet . With her he had at least two children:

His heir was first his underage son Gruffydd, after his untimely death his daughter Hawise became his heiress according to the English inheritance law. This led to a dispute with Owen's brother Gruffydd ap Gruffydd, who claimed rule under Welsh inheritance law. Eventually, Hawise remained the heir to the lands of Owen de la Pole.
