Ox Mountains
The Ox Mountains (or Slieve Gamph , Irish Sliabh Gamh , German: " Ox Mountain ") are a mountain range in County Sligo in western Ireland . They are also known as "St Patrick's Mountain". St. Patrick is said to have built many churches here.
The highest point of the Ox Mountains is the Knockalongy (Irish Cnoc na Loinge , "hill of the ship"), which rises to a height of 544 m.
There are different interpretations of the Irish Gaelic name sliabh gamh : On the one hand , it can be called the mountain of the storm - the mountain is heavily exposed to the winds of the Atlantic, on the other hand, gamh also refers to a subspecies of the ox of this region. The Knocknashee Hillfort, discovered in 1988, is located on the approximately 276 m high Knocknashee (Irish Cnoc na Sí , "Hill of the Fairies") .
The Ox Mountains begin directly southwest of Ballysadare and run west-southwest about sixty kilometers into County Mayo . In the mountains lies u. a. the portal Tomb by Croagh .
geology
Gneiss , mica slate and granite form the rock base of the mountains. Large parts of the area are covered with peat. There are some wooded areas while others have bare rock. In the north and south the rock is interspersed with limestone and sandstone and is suitable as farmland.
