The Oxos Temple is a temple in honor of the river god Oxus . The temple is located on the high right bank of the Amu Darya River in what is now Tajikistan . The Amu Darya forms the border with Afghanistan at this point . The temple was founded shortly after the conquest of Bactia by Alexander the Great . It is considered to be the only cult building in Bactria until the Kushan period . The temple was destroyed and rebuilt several times.
Between 1976 and 1991, the Oxus Temple was excavated under the direction of Igor Pitschikjan . The Oxus treasure probably has no direct relation to the temple.
