Oyakodon

Oyakodon ( Japanese 親子 丼 , is also pronounced oyakodonburi ; oyakodon is a short form; literal meaning: "parent-child bowl") is a Japanese rice bowl dish ( donburi ), the ingredients of which are chicken, egg, spring onions (sometimes normal Onions) and other ingredients ( dashi , sake , soy sauce ). Cooked all together, this dish is served in a large bowl with rice.

Meaning of the name and preparation

The name of the dish “parent-child bowl” is derived from the fact that chicken and egg are prepared together and served in one bowl. In Japan, oyakodon is often served in soba restaurants and other traditional Japanese restaurants. The sauce varies in taste and depends on the season, ingredients and region. A typical flavored sauce might consist of dashi , shoyu, and mirin . The ratio between the ingredients varies and is different from region to region. For oyakodon, dashi is recommended with a light soy sauce or a dark soy sauce seasoned with sugar.

There are various oyakodon dishes such as tanindon ( 他人 丼 , literally: "stranger's bowl"). In Tanindon only chicken is replaced with beef, otherwise the ingredients remain the same.
