Pediatric triangle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pediatric Triangle (Engl. Pediatric assessment triangle , shortly PAT ) is a simple and easy to learn judgment algorithm for initial assessment of pediatric emergency patients , for example in emergency medical services .

The examiner focuses on

  • the behavior and appearance ,
  • the breathing and breath work and
  • the circulation of the skin .

Based on the results of this initial assessment, which lasts a few seconds, a quick decision can be made as to whether the respective case is a “sick child” or a “non-sick child”, whereby “sick” is understood to mean an immediate threat to life.

The “PAT” algorithm is the gold standard in pre- and intra-hospital emergency care for infants and children. All "Letter" courses teach the use of PAT. For example, the “PAT” algorithm is published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in the “PEPP” course concept (Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professional) .
