Péter Paczolay

Péter Paczolay (born May 20, 1956 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian lawyer , university professor and judge at the European Court of Human Rights .

Live and act

Paczolay studied law at the University of Budapest , where he graduated in 1980. In 1983 he was admitted to the Hungarian Bar Association. In the same year he took up a position as research assistant at the Institute for Legal Theory at the University of Budapest, in 1986 he became assistant professor there. In 1989 he received his doctorate in law and political science. He was then an associate professor in Budapest, and from 1992 he also held an associate professorship at the University of Szeged . From 1990 to 1996 he was also a research assistant to the President of the Hungarian Constitutional Court . In 1999 he completed his habilitation in Budapest and then held a full professorship at both the University of Budapest and the University of Szeged. Between 2000 and 2005 Paczolay was Deputy Head, and between 2005 and 2006 Head of the Office of the President of the Republic of Hungary. From 2005 to 2013 he was a member of the Venice Commission and from 2009 to 2011 also its vice-president.

In 2006 Paczolay was appointed judge at the Hungarian Constitutional Court. In 2007 he became its vice-president and its president from 2008 to 2015. From 2016 to 2017 he was the special envoy in Italy, Malta and San Marino. In January 2017 he was elected as a representative of Hungary to succeed András Sajó as judge at the European Court of Human Rights . He took up his term of office, which is expected to last until 2026, on April 24, 2017.
