PALSAR

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PALSAR is the name for certain special forces of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The name is a word created from Hebrew פלוגת-סיור, (Plugat Sijur, reconnaissance unit). They have the most modern weapons and complete special training including Krav Maga for close combat , which prepares them for reconnaissance and special missions .

The IDF partially consolidates them into larger units with many different capabilities: Battalion- sized units called Gadsar (word creation from Gdud Sijur, reconnaissance battalion). Each Gadsar consists of three specialized plugots (units): demolition and combat technology (Plugat Habalah Handasit, short: PALHAN ), reconnaissance (Plugat Sijur, short: PALSAR) and anti-tank (Pluga Neged Tankim, short: PALNAT ).

Members of the PALSAR units are trained in the areas of navigation, scouting, demining and intelligence.

The M16 rifle , the Colt M4 carbine and the M203 grenade launchers are used for defense . Heavier weapons include RPGs (hand-operated anti-tank grenade launcher), M72 (66mm portable, disposable anti-tank weapon ), and the Israeli Viper mine-clearing system. This Viper-B system consists of an armored vehicle trailer, from which plastic explosives are scattered, creating a wide, mine-free path for attacking troops to follow.

The PALSARs are small units with only 18 to 20 people each and work independently of one another. Each PALSAR is divided into two teams of 9 to 10 soldiers.
