PDFedit is a free PDF editor for UNIXoid operating systems. The program does not provide support for encrypted PDF files and it is not intended for word processing . PDF is a complex format which is intended for publishing finished PDF documents and not for making subsequent modifications. PDFedit offers technically experienced users structured access to this complex, internal data structure. Basic knowledge of the PDF specifications is therefore necessary in order to carry out substantial modifications. For simpler tasks such as For example, when cutting pages, it is advisable to use other programs.

PDFedit's user interface is based on Qt 3 and its script engine on QSA. Scripts can also be written in ECMAScript . A command line interface for PDF editing is also part of the program. Xpdf is used for low-level processes close to the source text.

PDFedit is only available in the old Debian version 6.0 ("Squeeze") and is no longer included in the current (i.e. stable) Debian 7 ("Wheezy"). PDFedit has also been removed from the newer Ubuntu versions from 12.10 ("Quantal").
