PFSF high-rise

The PSFS Building (now officially Loews Philadelphia Hotel ) is a skyscraper in Philadelphia (USA). It is considered to be the first skyscraper in the USA to be built in an international style .

history

It was designed and completed in 1932 by the Swiss-American architects George Howe and William Lescaze . The building has a height of approx. 150 meters. A billboard with the bank's initials is mounted on top of the building. With 8 meters high, red neon letters, the PSFS shines about 32 kilometers. The architects themselves made the proposal to use only the abbreviation PSFS instead of the full name ( Philadelphia Savings Fund Society ), which was not very common in 1932. In 1976 it was considered a national and historical landmark . In 1997 the house was taken over by the Loews Corporation , which reopened it in April 2000 as the Loews Philadelphia Hotel . The PSFS mark was retained as a historical architectural feature.

Interior

The Philadelphia Savings Fund Society's offices were located on the second floor so that shops on the first floor could not only pay rent but also attract the medium-sized savings account holders on whom the banking business lived. Today (2009) there is a hotel in it.
