OrangeFS is a freely distributed file system (cluster file system) that has been part of the Linux kernel as a kernel module since May 2016 (from version 4.6) .
It goes back to the Parallel Virtual File System . In 2010 OrangeFS replaced PVFS2 as the major version. The company Omnibond provides commercial support for the file system.
The OrangeFS client runs in userspace and allows access to OrangeFS from Mac OS X as well.
OrangeFS is object-based: files and directories consist of at least two objects; one for the metadata and the payload. The file system does not require any configuration and is mainly used in research and science.
