The pairing injury , also known under the names Nachbalz , Balznachspiel or Begattungsnachspiel is a behavior after copulation different animal species occurs. The exact functions of this behavior are still unclear, but they are very likely to vary from species to species.

Like courtship or the pairing prelude, the pairing aftermath is mostly ritualized . It may be used to appease the partner afterwards or to prevent escape behavior .
