Pachycaulie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In botany, pachycaulia is the development of thick, unbranched (or only slightly) branched trunks with soft wood . Plants with pachycaulene trunks often appear in arid areas where the soil hinders the formation of voluminous underground storage organs.

Pachycaulie is a typical feature of the cycads (Cycadaceae). It is also widespread in the cucurbitaceae , Apocynaceae , Dioscoreaceae , Icacinaceae , Passifloraceae and Vitaceae , so it often occurs in clans that are otherwise largely trailing.
