Pacific Conference Games

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pacific Conference Games were track and field competitions that were held every four years between 1969 and 1985. Australia , Canada , Japan , New Zealand and the United States were involved in the first Pacific Conference Games, and from 1981 they were open to athletes from all nations.

The event was proposed during the 1967 Tokyo Summer Universiade, at a meeting of Japanese national sports officials with their counterparts from other western Pacific Coast nations. The intent was to hold two-day high-level athletics competitions one year after each Olympics. It was mentioned in contemporary reports that this limited format was proposed in order to exclude the Soviet Union, which boycotted the Tokyo Universiade.
