The 1978/79 season was the second and final regular season of the Pacific Hockey League (PHL). The champions became the Phoenix Roadrunners .
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Long Beach Rockets stopped playing.
- The San Diego Mariners were sold and changed their name to the San Diego Hawks.
- The Los Angeles Blades were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Spokane Flyers were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Tucson Rustlers were added to the league as an expansion team.

In the regular season, the six teams should complete 60 games each, but the championship was ended prematurely and the first-placed Phoenix Roadrunners was named champion. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a tie and zero points for a defeat.
