Pacific Tri-Nations

The Pacific Tri-Nations was a rugby union tournament that ran from 1982 to 2005 for the national teams of Fiji , Samoas and Tongas . It was comparable to the Tri Nations tournament and the Six Nations tournament. In 2006 the tournament was replaced by the Pacific Nations Cup .

The first winner of the event was the team from Samoa, who are also record winners of the event. Between 1993 and 1995, the previous year's winner took part in the Super 10 tournament against teams from Australia , New Zealand and South Africa (forerunner of Super Rugby ). In 2000, the tournament was played for the first time in two legs.

In 2005 the tournament was one of the qualifying rounds for the 2007 Rugby Union World Cup . With tournament winners Samoa and Fiji, the first two teams qualified directly for the final tournament. Tonga, which was only third and bottom of the group after four defeats, had to play against the Cook Islands in 2006 and met South Korea in the last play-offs in 2007 .
