The Paderborn Cathedral Choir is the boys' choir at the Hohen Domkirche in Paderborn and the oldest of the four choirs at Paderborn Cathedral . Re-founded in the 19th century, it continues the tradition of choral singing at the Paderborn Bishop's Church.

history

Its history goes back to the founding years of the Diocese of Paderborn . A choir could have existed as early as the beginning of the 9th century. Cantors are mentioned at the beginning of the 13th century. Choral music consisted of the church liturgy throughout the Paderborn Cathedral. In the 19th century, a church music restoration movement took place through the General Cecilia Association for Germany . The choir, which was newly founded in 1889 as a four-part boys' choir, continues to exist organisationally to this day.

The choir today

The choir of boys ( soprano and alto ) and male voices performs the pontifical offices on the high festive days and, alternating with the other choirs at the cathedral ( girls' choir at the Hohen Dom , cathedral choir , Schola Gregoriana ), the Sunday chapter offices.

Every year the cathedral music director trains around 20 boys between the ages of 8 and 9 to be boys' choirs. During this roughly one year pre-school period, the boys learn about their voices, general music theory and the liturgy in the High Cathedral. After that, the choir boys are accepted into the actual choir. The adult choir members ( tenor and bass ) are former choirboys. The two to three weekly rehearsals take place in the Johannes Hatzfeld House, which was converted into the "House of Dommusik" in 2009, on the north side of the cathedral. In addition to the church services, the choir regularly organizes concerts in Paderborn Cathedral and in churches of the Archdiocese of Paderborn. The cathedral choir's Christmas concert is a fixture in Paderborn's cultural life.

The repertoire includes music from Mass ordinaries and motets from all epochs and last but not least Gregorian chant . The choir regularly takes on oratorio works in its concerts. (J. Haydn: "The Creation", JS Bach: "Christmas Oratorio", L. Bernstein: "Chichester Psalms".)

Concert tours

Under the cathedral conductor Theodor Holthoff, the choir began regular concert tours abroad in the 1980s. Concert tours have taken the choir to Rome, Le Mans, Vienna and 1984 to Canada . In recent years the destinations have been Malta (2009), Rome (2013) and France (2014). In October 2015, the cathedral choir visited the USA with concerts and performances in New York (St. Patrick's Cathedral, Manhattan), Washington and Atlanta. The choir is a member of the Pueri Cantores Choir Association and took part in the Association's German Choir Festivals in Münster (2008), Würzburg (2011) and Trier (2015).
