Pagani (Greece)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Camp Pagani ( Greek Στρατόπεδο Παγανής Stratópedo Paganís ) was a refugee camp in the east of the Greek island of Lesbos , which was set up for refugees who entered the European Union illegally .

The center, a converted former warehouse in Lesvos, was designed for 300 people, but at times housed up to 1,200 cramped immigrants, often without medical care and beaten by the guards, condemned by Greek and foreign humanitarian observers. On August 18, 2009, 160 refugee minors held in a single room with only one toilet started a hunger strike and demanded immediate freedom.

The Noborder network organized a NoBorderCamp in 2009 because of the inhumane conditions in this camp . Greek Deputy Security Minister Spiros Vougias visited the Pagani camp on October 22, 2009. It was then temporarily closed until further notice . The last inmates left the refugee camp on November 1, 2009.
