The Palácio da Bolsa (German: Stock Exchange Palace) is a building originally used as a stock exchange and commercial court in the Portuguese city of Porto . The building was built in the 19th century by the Associação Comercial do Porto , the Chamber of Commerce of the City of Porto, in a neoclassical style. It is located in Porto's old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Today the Palácio da Bolsa is used as a conference center and can be visited.

history

The Palácio da Bolsa was built on the site of a former Franciscan monastery that was destroyed in the course of the Miguelist War. In 1841, Queen Maria II donated the ruins of the monastery to the city's Chamber of Commerce.

Construction began in 1842 according to the plans of architect Joaquim Porto da Costa Lima Junior, who designed a neoclassical palace influenced by Palladianism , allowing himself to be influenced by the structures of the city. While the core of the building was completed in 1850, the interior decoration was not completed until 1910. The Palácio da Bolsa was financed by a levy that the Chamber of Commerce imposed on its members.

The Moorish Hall (Salao arabe) was built between 1860 and 1879 by Goncalves de Soursa, who borrowed from the Alhambra in Granada.
