PalOOCa (Palo for OpenOffice.org Calc) is an extension for OpenOffice.org Calc, which allows access to the open source OLAP server Palo .

Range of functions

With the help of the PalOOCa extension, a query can be created in OpenOffice.org Calc for Palo. The result in the form of numerical data is displayed in Calc and is available there for further analysis and processing. Changed data are written back to Palo by PalOOCa. The combination of OpenOffice.org, PalOOCa and Palo is therefore not only suitable for distributing reports, but can also be used to implement planning and budgeting applications. Other functions are data import, the provision of special Calc functions for Palo and a modeling tool that can be used to edit Palo's data structures.

background

Traditionally, the business intelligence market has been dominated by proprietary software . For some time, however, servers for online analytical processing have been developed that are sold under an open source license . However, these use the proprietary Microsoft Excel as a front-end interface and therefore do not enable complete open source business intelligence. PalOOCa closes this gap by allowing the use of the free spreadsheet program OpenOffice.org.

development

PalOOCa has been developed since March 2007 at the Chair for System Development / Application Systems at the TU Chemnitz together with partner companies. The program is published under the GNU Lesser General Public License .

The technological basis of the development is the Java programming language . PalOOCa uses the Palo Java API to communicate with Palo.
