With its 800 rooms, the old Palace Hotel was one of the largest hotels in the world in its time. It was also called the "Bonanza Inn". It was financed primarily by the co-founder of the Bank of California William Ralston , and it was famous for his large courtyard, which was converted into a garden courtyard around 1900. The building survived the earthquake of 1906, but a few hours later it was destroyed by flames.

The new Palace Hotel was opened on December 19, 1909. Outwardly simpler than its predecessor, it surpassed its predecessor in terms of splendor and elegance on the inside. This is where Woodrow Wilson made speeches and where President Warren G. Harding died in 1923 .
