The Palacio San Martín is a building in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It is located in Plaza San Martín , in the Retiro district .

The Palacio in Beaux Arts style was planned by the architect Alejandro Christophersen for Mercedes Castellanos de Anchorena . After four years of construction, it was completed in 1909. The federal government acquired the building in 1936 and used it as the foreign ministry until 1993. Today it is used by the Ministry for festive receptions.

Initially, the building was known as the Palacio Anchorena after its owner . Today the name is reminiscent of the national hero José de San Martín . The Palacio is home to numerous works of art by Argentine and American artists, including Antonio Berni , Pablo Curatella Manes , Lino Enea Spilimbergo and Roberto Matta .
