Palacio de Santa Cruz

The Palacio de Santa Cruz in Valladolid is the first Renaissance building in Spain.

Formerly the seat of the Colegio Mayor Santa Cruz , then temporarily the State Sculpture Museum, it now houses the Rectorate of the University of Valladolid , the University Museum , the Biblioteca Santa Cruz and a collection of African art.

history

Pope Sixtus IV authorized the establishment of the Colegio Mayor by Cardinal Pedro González de Mendoza in May 1479 , but construction did not begin until 1486. Pedro Pulido is believed to be the architect , but the names Enrique Egas or Juan Guas are also mentioned. Lorenzo Vázquez de Segovia is likely to be responsible for the style change in the course of construction . Cardinal Mendoza abandoned the originally approved Gothic style of the building and ordered the building to be continued in the Renaissance style. It was completed in 1491.

Major renovations were carried out in 1603 by Juan de Nates (column exchange in the courtyard), in 1744 by Juan de Sagarvinaga and Domingo de Ondátegui and from 1765 to 1768 by Ventura Rodríguez and his student Manuel Godoy (exchange of the Gothic windows).

The college remained closed during the Napoleonic Wars and served as a residence for Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington , among others . In 1838 it was definitely closed. In the 20th century it became the seat of the rectorate.
