Palais Bechtolsheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bechtolsheim Palace , located in the western old town of Eisenach , was the representative residence of the Vice Chancellor of the Duchy of Saxony-Weimar , who resided in Eisenach . It is considered to be the oldest surviving classical building in the city.

history

The so-called Chancellor's Palace or Palais Bechtolsheim on Jakobsplan 9 bordered directly on the north-western section of the city wall. It was probably built in the late 1780s using parts of a previous Baroque building.

The most important owner was Vice Chancellor Johann Ludwig Freiherr von Mauchenheim called von Bechtolsheim (1725–1806), who was Duke Carl August's deputy , thus the highest-ranking civil servant in Eisenach. Goethe was also a guest in this house on several occasions for state affairs and on his travels. In the 19th century the palace became the property of the industrial Streiber family. It again served as a representative residence. During the Nazi dictatorship, Eisenacher SA had house rights in the building, and the building survived the end of the war undamaged. Immediately expropriated and nationalized during GDR times, it housed the city library and the municipal housing administration for a time; The Eisenach branch of the Goethe Society also has its meeting point here. Today it serves as an office building for the municipal housing administration.

Structural matters

The building was originally a three-wing structure, the northern wing no longer exists. The two-storey central building and the south wing underwent an extensive restoration in the 1990s, during which numerous architectural details inside the building were examined and secured. In the mostly representatively designed rooms you will find a wide range of stucco ornaments, the associated paintings, furniture, stoves and other furnishings, on the other hand, have not outlasted the time. The northern wing, which no longer exists, formerly had an arbor-like passage to the adjoining garden.
