Il Palazzo Reale di Tripoli - the former governor's palace

The Palazzo del Governatore or Palazzo Reale ( Italian for 'Governor's Palace' or 'Royal Palace', Arabic قصر الخلد, DMG qaṣr al-ḫuld  'Eternal Palace ' orقصر الشعب / qaṣr aš-šaʿb  / 'People's Palace') is the former seat of the Italian governor of Italian Libya , who was based in Tripoli and held this position until 1943.

From 1951 the Palazzo Reale was the royal palace of King Idris I , the head of state of the Kingdom of Libya . the building had this function until the military coup by Muammar al-Gaddafi in 1969 and the establishment of the People's Republic of Libya . It suffered severe damage after the 1986 US bombing of Libya ( Operation El Dorado Canyon ). Until 2008 the building was called the "People's Palace" and was the seat of the national library. After the restoration, which was carried out by a team of Italian designers and a construction company from Italy until 2009, the former Royal Governor's Palace became the Museum of Libya .
