Pale Moon is a free and cross-platform web browser with an emphasis on adaptability of the interface . The software runs under Windows and Linux , there are also variants for older operating systems and hardware.

description

Pale Moon was originally a fork of Mozilla Firefox and for a long time it developed more or less in parallel. From the 12th version onwards, the fast version releases of Firefox were no longer followed and core components and additional features were developed independently. Since then, Pale Moon has become a separate browser that is independent of Firefox.

The HTML renderer Gecko became Goanna , an independent further development that is also used in the Basilisk web browser .

The versions for Windows and Linux are available in 32 and 64 bit , as well as an Android version, which is currently not supported and is therefore not stable. The current version was also available in a version that only requires SSE instead of SSE2 , and thus, in contrast to Firefox, the execution z. B. on AMD Athlon XP , Pentium III and other processors without SSE2 support. This was later discontinued and continued as New Moon, but has not been updated since 2018. Other variants exist from different programmers.

properties

It is important for developers to keep key components of Firefox. Major changes were not incorporated; in particular, the Australis interface introduced in version 29.0 was not adopted. In addition, the browser should continue XUL , XPCOM and NPAPI - plug-in support, which can no longer be used by Firefox 57th Therefore, it is an alternative browser for users who need these interfaces.

In contrast to Firefox, which finally removed support for RSS feeds in version 64.0 , you can still subscribe to feeds as dynamic bookmarks in Pale Moon .

From version 28.3, Pale Moon supports playing videos in AV1 format. However, like in Firefox, this functionality must first be activated by a setting.

In addition, the following components have been removed from the Firefox code:

Although the browser is described as particularly fast and lightweight, it was not able to fully convince in benchmark tests in 2016: It did rather poorly in speed tests. But the memory consumption of the browser is very good.

Compared to other browsers, the optimizations of the compiler can bring some users advantages - depending on their personal settings.
