Palm Desktop is the PIM software supplied with the Palm handheld computer for managing

  • Calendar entries
  • Contacts
  • tasks
  • Memos

There are more modules in newer versions. The four basic tasks correspond to the main functions of the Palm pocket computer in the delivery state. Interfaces to other PIM software such as B. Outlook , Lightning , Evolution , iCal or Mac address book are not provided, so that the corresponding function may be available twice on the PC.

history

Palm Desktop was delivered in 1995 in version 1.0 and is also delivered on current devices. The Mac version of Palm Desktop is based on Claris Organizer - PIM software that was offered for the Mac in the early 1990s. After the takeover of Claris by Palm, the software was revised and renamed.

Platforms

Palm Desktop software is available for Mac OS and Windows. There are alternatives for Linux.

File formats

Up to version 4.x a proprietary file format was used to store the data, which was read and written by the Hotsync software for data exchange with the Palm. A programming interface for C and Java made it possible to access this data indirectly.

In newer versions, the Microsoft Access database format is used for storing data.

Conversion

An import or export is required when switching to and from the Palm handheld computer to other solutions. Palm Desktop offers the CSV or vCard format for this.

Extensions

In principle, Palm Desktop offers a COM interface to the functionalities. However, it is not fully published, but can only be accessed via plugins.
