Palm Pilot was the Palm company's first personal digital assistant (PDA) from 1996.

Due to a trademark dispute with the Pilot Pen company , the second generation available from 1997 was given the name PalmPilot. From 1998 the devices only bore the name Palm followed by a Roman numeral, such as Palm III . The widespread use of the Palm Pilots at the beginning of the PDA era (Palm had sold 350,000 units by the end of 1996) had led to Palm Pilot becoming a synonym for PDA.

The Palm Pilot did not have a keyboard, but was operated exclusively with a pen. The Motorola Dragonball was used as the processor and the Palm OS specially developed for the pilot was used as the operating system .

The pilot was initially available in two versions: Palm Pilot 1000 (128 kB RAM) and Palm Pilot 5000 (512 kB RAM). From 1997 the two models PalmPilot Personal (512 kB RAM) and PalmPilot Professional (1 MB RAM) were available. IBM Palm Pilots has also been manufacturing Palm Pilots under license since 1997 and marketing it under the name WorkPad .

The dimensions were 120 mm × 80 mm × 15 mm and the weight was 160 g (with two AAA batteries).
