The Paluweh (also Rokatenda ) is an 875 meter high active stratovolcano on the Indonesian island of Palu'e . The island belongs to the Lesser Sunda Islands , which, together with the Great Sunda Islands on the northeastern edge of the Indian Ocean, form a horseshoe-shaped zone of increased earthquake and volcanic activity.

outbreaks

An eruption of the Paluweh took place in 1928. In 1964, a long-lasting outbreak occurred as a result of which 3,000 people were evacuated to the neighboring island of Flores .

The volcano has been increasingly active again since autumn 2012. An eruption occurred in early February 2013. The ash cloud was around 4,000 meters high and rained down on the island. Parts of the harvest were destroyed and many islanders left the island. Another eruption with an ash cloud reaching 2,000 meters high occurred on August 10, 2013. Six people were killed and 3,000 residents were brought to safety in Flores.
