Pannar Seed is an African agricultural company headquartered in South Africa . It primarily develops improved seeds for corn as well as sunflowers , soybeans , sorghum , kidney beans , wheat and various pasture grasses .

history

Pannar Seed was founded in Greytown, South Africa in 1958 . In 1960, Pannar Seed began developing hybrid corn seeds specifically intended for South African farmers. A few years later, Pannar was the first private company in South Africa to introduce a corn hybrid. In the following decades, Pannar also established itself in the region and outside of Africa. In autumn 2010 Pioneer Hi-Bred tried to acquire the majority stake in Pannar. The merger was banned by the South African antitrust authorities.

Pannar Seed operates five research stations on a total of 400 hectares in several countries in southern Africa, as well as four in the wheat belt of the USA and one in Argentina . In addition to conventional plant breeding, Pannar also uses biotechnological methods such as genetic maps , precision breeding and green genetic engineering .
