The Pantomimeteatret (German: Pantomimentheater ) is an open-air theater in Tivoli in the Danish capital Copenhagen . It is mainly used for performances by pantomimes in the tradition of the classic Commedia dell'arte , which are performed there daily. The stage is also used as a venue for ballet and other dance performances.

history

When Tivoli opened for the first time in 1874, a small theater made of wood and painted canvases had long since existed on the site of today's building. After some alterations and major repairs, the decision was made in 1873 to replace it with a newer, more modern building. The architect Vilhelm Dahlerup (1836–1907), who was also busy building the Det Kongelige Teater at the time , was commissioned to design it. A year later, in 1874, the Chinese-style open-air theater was ready for use.

architecture

Dahlerup, who had never been to China himself, got the inspiration for this building from pictures borrowed from an engineer who had previously been stationed in the Far East. Special attention was paid to the mechanical curtain, which requires five men to operate and which unfolds like a train of peacocks .

Depending on the seating, the theater offers 120 seats or around 1,000 standing places.
