Armored glass is a general term for special laminated safety glass (VSG) that can withstand impact, bullet and blasting effects.

These glass plates are for the object and personal protection used, for example, to switches of banks, shop windows , the armor of armored vehicles or for covering and protecting smartphone displays. Different requirements must be observed: For use for personal protection (e.g. bank counters), priority is given to ensuring that the glass does not or only slightly splinters in the event of damage to the person to be protected. Object protection (e.g. shop windows) is primarily about the fact that the glass can withstand a multitude of possible attacks, break-ins (knocking in) or an impact or strike against another object for as long as possible without allowing access through a hole. The armored glass can burst, but the safety lamination keeps the armored glass pane stable. For a precise assessment, the various glasses are divided into resistance classes.

Division into resistance classes

Breakthrough / breakthrough

To test the impact resistance in accordance with DIN EN 356 A, a 110 cm × 90 cm pane must withstand the three impacts (for P5A: nine times) of a 4.11 kg steel ball with a diameter of 10 cm from different heights. To test the breakthrough resistance according to DIN EN 356 B, it is determined how many blows of a 2 kg ax, which is mechanically guided at 11 m / s, are required to open a 40 cm × 40 cm opening in the test disc, which is also 110 cm × 90 cm to beat.

DIN EN 356 DIN 52290-3
DIN 52290-4
VdS properties
P1A - - Impact resistance: 1.5 m drop height
P2A A1 - Impact resistance: 0,3 m drop height
P3A A2 - Impact resistance: 0,6 m drop height
P4A A3 EH01 Impact resistance : 0,9 m drop height / burglary resistance against physical violence
P5A - EH02 Throw-through resistance: 0,9 m drop height (9 times) / burglary resistance against simple tools such as B. Screwdrivers, pliers and wedges
P6B B1 EH1 Break-through resistance: 30–50 hits / break-in resistance against a nail iron or use of a second screwdriver
P7B B2 EH2 Break-through resistance: 51–70 hits / burglary resistance against e.g. B. saws, hammers, ax, chisels and chisels, cordless drill
P8B B3 EH3 Break-through resistance: over 70 hits / break-in resistance against power tools such as B. Drill, jigsaw or reciprocating saw and angle grinder

bombardment

To test bullet resistance in accordance with DIN EN 1063, three shots are fired on three 500 mm × 500 mm panes, the points of impact forming a triangle with an edge length of 120 mm in the center of the pane. The resistance class is determined by the type of bullet used and the shooting distance (5–10 m).

DIN EN 1063 DIN 52290-2 properties
BR 1 C1 Bullet resistance handgun caliber .22 lr
BR 2 C 1 Bullet resistance handgun caliber 9 mm Parabellum
BR 3 C2 Bullet resistance handgun caliber .357 Magnum
BR 4 C3 Bullet resistance handgun caliber .44 Remington Magnum
BR 5 - Bullet resistance long weapon (rifle) caliber 5.56 × 45
BR 6 C4 Bullet resistance long weapon (rifle) caliber 7.62 × 51 soft core
BR 7 - Bullet resistance long weapon (rifle) caliber 7.62 × 51 hard core
- C5 Bullet resistance
SG 1 - Bullet resistance long weapon (shotgun) caliber 12/70 (1 shot)
SG 2 - Bullet resistance long weapon (shotgun) caliber 12/70 (3 shots)
- B2 / C2-SA Bullet resistance

Explosive effect

To test the explosion resistance in accordance with DIN EN 13541, a pressure surge that hits the 110 cm × 90 cm pane perpendicularly for at least 20 ms is generated, which simulates the explosion of 100 to 2500 kg TNT at a distance of 35 to 50 m.

DIN EN 13541 DIN 52290-5 properties
ER1 - Explosion-resistant, maximum pressure 050–100 kPa
ER2 D1 Explosion-resistant, maximum pressure 100–150 kPa
ER3 D2 Explosive-resistant, maximum pressure 150–200 kPa
ER4 D3 Explosion-resistant, maximum pressure 200–350 kPa
