Paolo Di Lauro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paolo Di Lauro (born August 26, 1953 in Naples ) is / was a boss of the Italian Camorra . He is nicknamed "Ciruzzo 'o milionario" ("Schnuckelbär, the millionaire"), which comes from his behavior when gambling.

He has been the head of the Di Lauro clan since the late 1980s and has long been one of the most influential and prominent figures of the Naples- based Camorra . He was among the 30 most wanted people in Italy and was arrested in Naples in September 2005.

Life

Camorra clan chief

The Di Lauro clan mainly operated in the northern peripheral areas of Naples, such as Secondigliano and Scampia , where one of the largest drug markets in Europe developed in the course of the 1990s. The clan made enormous profits from drug trafficking , especially cocaine , but was also active in other areas such as arms trafficking and counterfeiting (manufacture of counterfeit fashion clothing) and also invested in legal sectors of the economy. It is estimated that Paolo Di Lauro achieved around 500,000 euros a month at peak times.

Over time, Paolo Di Lauro - he has eleven children - gave more decision-making power to his sons, especially Cosimo Di Lauro (* 1973). From 2003 onwards, Paolo Di Lauro was on the run from the police and Cosimo took over the leadership of the clan.

Faida di Scampia

In 2004 a gang war, known as “Faida di Scampìa”, broke out between the Di Lauro clan and the so-called “scissionisti” (it .: split offs), consisting of families that until then belonged to the Di Lauro clan had. For this were u. a. reforms probably initiated by the Di Lauro sons responsible. Raffaele “'o spagnolo” Amato was considered the leader of the “scissionisti” . This war was waged with ruthless severity on both sides and claimed 150 deaths in the first year alone, including those practically uninvolved like Gelsomina Verde , an ex-girlfriend of a "scissionista".

arrest

The feud attracted too much attention, so many high-ranking members of both sides, including Raffaele Amato and Cosimo Di Lauro (arrested January 2005), were arrested by the police. On September 16, 2005, they succeeded in arresting Paolo Di Lauro, who had probably returned because of the feud. According to the police, the whereabouts of Paolo Di Lauro have been found out because he ordered his favorite fish from a fishmonger.

It is more likely, however, that a person close to Paolo Di Lauro betrayed the hiding place. One day after the arrest, a horribly disfigured corpse was found, the mutilations of which (ears cut off, hollowed out eyes, cross cut in the lips, etc.) indicated that the Di Lauro clan had mistaken this man for the informant .

Paolo Di Lauro ended the gang war shortly after his arrest, and the “scissionisti” were granted autonomy. Personal feuds of revenge continued (and continue), however.

Paolo Di Lauro was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2005.
