Papan bunga (Indonesian for flower wall; "Papan" for "wall", "Bunga" for "flowers") are movable walls that are used in Indonesia to congratulate weddings, births and other festive occasions and to condolve at funerals. The corresponding messages are attached with plastic flowers. The colorfully designed boards are set up in front of the respective residential buildings, but they are often also temporarily lined up in groups along busy streets.

Concept and construction

Papan Bunga are usually around 2 meters by 1.5 meters. But there are also double, composite partitions.

The messages are strongly formalized: Most of the time, the congratulations can be found at the top, for example “Selamat Sukses”. This is followed by the names of the relevant people and, if applicable, the locations of their origin. The partition walls are donated, for example by friends or the employer. Their names or the company logo can be shown below. The typeface is supplemented by simple symbols and decorative elements made of flowers or made of other materials such as styrofoam.

Papan Bunga are made by special florists . The walls are made of rectangular wooden or iron frames. A kind of carpet is stretched over this, behind which there is a layer of foam . The flowers, mostly made of plastic, are attached with pins.

The finished flower walls are transported to their presentation location and displayed on easels. After a while they are removed again. The material is reused and reconnected to new content
