The Papua New Guinea University of Technology was founded in 1965 as the Papua New Guinea Institute of Higher Technical Education in Port Moresby . In 1968 she moved to Lae , the second largest city in the country. In 1970 it was renamed the Papua New Guinea Institute of Technology . It received its current status and name in August 1973. It is sister university to the University of Papua New Guinea at Port Moresby and the only technical university in the South Pacific outside of Australia and New Zealand. 5–10 percent of the students come from abroad. Every year around 1000 students receive their diploma.

Applied natural sciences, technical disciplines, agriculture, architecture and economics are taught in 13 departments. Research and development work includes a. in the areas of forestry, ecology and technologies adapted for village use. However, the university is considered to be chronically under-equipped.

In 2012, there were clashes among the students between hostile ethnic groups. The Netherlands-born Vice Chancellor of the Albert Schram University of Applied Sciences was expelled from the government to Australia in 2013 because he was allegedly a security risk.
