The University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) was founded in 1965 by the Australian colonial administration in Port Moresby as the first university in New Guinea in the eastern part of the island. Today it also includes 5 other branches, u. a. in Madang , and study centers in 20 of the country's 21 provinces. It is the second largest university in Oceania after the University of the South Pacific in Suva ( Fiji ) .

history

After it was founded, originally as the University of Papua and New Guinea , the university suffered from a lack of resources for a long time. In the 1970s it became a center of Melanesia's cultural renaissance . The Australian historian and Vice Chancellor of the college, Vale Ken Inglis (1929–2017) played an important role in the development phase .

Almost the entire political elite of the country as well as those of the Solomon Islands were trained here. Some writers and artists who were important for the region also studied here, including a. Russell Soaba and Michael Dom . 15 percent of the places should be kept free for students from the neighboring regions, but this quota was never reached. After student unrest in 1978, a reorganization took place in 1983. In 1997, on the occasion of the Sandline affair, there were again student protests and in May 1998 further student unrest with 20 injured. The situation at the university was described as critical overall in 1998.

In 2000/2001 the departments were renamed and replaced by a school structure in order to promote interdisciplinarity. However, the number of students has decreased over the years. In 2012 the call for a renewal of the university structures and better international networking became louder again. In 2017 there were student unrest, in 2018/19 there were disputes over the dissolution of the university council by the government and the filling of the position of Vice Chancellor.
