Mekere Morauta
Mekere Morauta (born June 12, 1946 in Kukipi , Papua Territory , † December 19, 2020 in Brisbane , Australia ) was a Papua New Guinean politician . He was Prime Minister from 1999 to 2002, later Member of Parliament for Port Moresby North-West in the Parliament of Papua New Guinea and Chairman of the National Capital District Commission until August 2006 .
Life
Mekere Morauta was born in Kukipi, a coastal village east of Kerema in what is now the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea. He went to local elementary school, then Kerema High School, and Sogeri National High School. He studied at the University of Papua New Guinea , which he graduated with a Bachelor of Economics in 1970 , and was an exchange student at Flinders University in Adelaide , South Australia .
After university, he made an outstanding career as a political economist in the public service and in the private sector. In 1975, Morauta was appointed Papua New Guinea's first finance minister. He held this office until 1982. He was director of the state commercial bank, the Papua New Guinea Bank Corporation (1983–1992), and governor of the state central bank of Papua New Guinea (1992–1996). In July 1997 he was elected to the Parliament of Papua New Guinea as MP for the constituency of Port Moresby North-West .
Morauta was a member of the so-called Gang of Four , a group of influential young state officials who played an important role in stabilizing the public administration in cooperation with the political forces of Papua New Guinea in the first decade of independence from 1975. (The other members of the group were Charles Lepani , Rabbie Namaliu, and Anthony Siaguru , Namaliu also became Prime Minister.)
On July 14, 1999, the Parliament in Port Moresby elected Morauta, the chairman of the PDM (People's Democratic Movement), prime minister. After his inauguration, he immediately broke off diplomatic relations with Taiwan that his predecessor Bill Skate had established two weeks earlier with the signing of an agreement on mutual recognition and the establishment of diplomatic relations between Papua New Guinea and Taiwan. His government made progress with a program of political and economic reform. Central management positions were redeployed and cooperation with international financial institutions was resumed. In August 2002, Mekere became Morauta after a chaotic electionMichael Somare replaced as Prime Minister.
On August 8, 2011, he became Minister of State Enterprise in the government of Peter O'Neill .
Mekere Morauta was married to Roslyn Morauta and had two sons from a previous marriage.
