James Marape

James Marape (born April 24, 1971 ) is a Papua New Guinea politician and Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea since May 30, 2019 .

Life

Marape belongs to the Huli ethnic group . He studied at the University of Papua New Guinea , made 1993 the Bachelor and closed 2000 with a postgraduate honors degree for Environmental Studies (Environmental Science) from.

Marape is married and has six children.

James Marape entered the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea for the first time in 2007 as a candidate for the National Alliance Party , where he represents the Tari-Pori district of the Hela province . From December 16, 2008 to February 2, 2011 he was Minister of Education. In 2012 he moved to the People's National Congress (PNC) party, for which he was re-elected in the 2012 general election.

He was also re-elected as a member of the PNC in the 2017 general election. In the new government under Prime Minister Peter O'Neill , he was appointed Minister of Finance on August 9, 2017. He resigned from office on April 11, 2019, citing differences of opinion with O'Neill on important issues as the reason.

Following the resignation of O'Neill, James Marape was elected the new Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea by MPs on May 30, 2019.
