from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parliamentary elections in Papua New Guinea 2012 took place from June 23 to July 17, 2012. The 111 members of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea were directly elected in 111 constituencies for five years each.

On April 4, 2012, parliament actually decided to postpone the elections by half a year, but after protests against this unconstitutional procedure, they were held on time. Compared to the 2007 elections, the number of mandates to be awarded was increased by 2 from 109 to 111. 3,435 candidates, including 135 women, applied for the 111 seats. Some of the candidates belonged to 46 parties and some ran as independents. 108 men and 3 women were elected. A total of 21 parties made it into parliament. The turnout was 76.89%.
