Rabbie Namaliu

Rabbie Langanai Namaliu (born April 3, 1947 in Kokopo , East New Britain ) was Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea from 1988 to 1992.

Rabbie Namaliu comes from East New Britain and belongs to the Tolai tribe . He received his education in Papua New Guinea and Canada , at the University of Victoria in Victoria , British Columbia . Prior to his political career, he was a political scientist at the University of Papua New Guinea .

In 1982 he was elected to the parliament of Papua New Guinea for the constituency of Kokopo . Before Namaliu became Prime Minister, he was Foreign Minister in Michael Somare's government from 1982 to 1984 . Since then, he has shared a common political path with Somare, who had led Papua New Guinea to independence in 1975. When Namaliu took over the government on July 4, 1988, Somare became its foreign minister. After losing the 1992 election, Namaliu was confronted with allegations of corruption, but was soon exonerated. He became foreign minister in the new administration of Michael Somare in 2002 and finance minister in a cabinet reshuffle on July 12, 2006. In the parliamentary elections of 2007 he lost the constituency of Kokopo, which he had represented continuously since 1982, and his seat in parliament.

He is a widower and has two grown sons.
