Hela is one of the 21 provinces of Papua New Guinea . More than 350,000 people live in the 10,500 km² province (as of 2010). The capital is Tari with about 8,000 inhabitants.

Hela was created on May 17, 2012 by spinning off the Komo Magarima, Koroba-Lake Kopiago and Tari-Pori districts from the Southern Highlands Province .

Hela belonged to the German colony of German New Guinea .

The neighboring provinces are Sandaun and East Sepik in the north, Enga in the east, Southern Highlands in the south and Western in the west.

economy

The province is very rich in natural gas. As part of the Papua New Guinea LNG Project , several natural gas fields (Hides, Kutubu, etc.) are to be developed and connected to the coast via a new pipeline. As a result of the construction work, many small farmers who had cultivated their land in accordance with customary law were expropriated. There are repeated complaints that the funds flowing into the province as part of the project are not being distributed fairly.

Districts and LLGs

Hela Province is divided into three districts. Each district consists of one or more "areas at the local administrative level", Local Level Government (LLG) Areas , which are divided into Rural (rural) or Urban (urban) LLGs.
