About this picture
The so-called "Highlands Highway"

Eastern Highlands is one of the 21 provinces of Papua New Guinea . With around 11,200 km² and around 579,825 inhabitants, this province is one of the most densely populated in the country. The capital is Goroka with 22,830 inhabitants in 2011.

Eastern Highlands is the easternmost of the mountain provinces. It has wild, high mountain ridges with Mount Michael as the highest mountain ( 3750  m ), as well as deep fertile valleys which are used for profitable tobacco and coffee plantations , cattle breeding and the cultivation of fruits and peanuts.

Eastern Highlands belonged to the German colony of German New Guinea , but remained unexplored until its end. It was not until 1951 that the highland area was divided into different provinces. Today the province is easily accessible from Lae via the Highlands Highway .

The neighboring provinces are Morobe in the east, Madang in the north, Simbu in the west and Gulf in the south.

population

The highland dwellers are mostly small in stature and have medium brown skin. Many tribes had an aggressive and warlike behavior, which is said to have been replaced today by a similar business practice.

The Fore were known for the Kuru disease , which they probably contracted from eating human brains. The Gahaku-Gambu were also warlike , while the Kamano are known for an unusually tense relationship between men and women. The Bena-Bena and Korofeigu firmly believe in male superiority and have a patrilineal tribal order.

With the Gururumba the men like to steal and destroy the property of others and there is a kind of envy cultivated, with the Siane, however, an emotional relationship with their own private property prevails, which is unusual for Papua New Guinea.
