history
The island of Manus was discovered in 1529 by the Spanish merchant Álvaro de Saavedra for the European cultural area and called Uray la Grande . It was not until the end of the Second World War that Manus gained a certain importance as a gigantic planned supply base for the armed forces of the United States , which was abandoned and left behind after the war. The cultural impact on the islanders was strong.
Since 2001 the Australian government has been running an internment camp on Manus for refugees who tried to enter Australia illegally by sea. It is the Manus Regional Processing Center .
