Lorengau (also known as Lo'ongow or Lorungau ) is the capital of the Manus Province in northern Papua New Guinea . The city lies on the edge of the sea eagle port on the island of Manus , which is the largest island of the Admiralty Islands . In 2000 Lorengau had 5,829 inhabitants, in 1990 it was 4,547. The island's copra harvest is also shipped from here .

history

During the Second World War , Japan conquered Lorengau without resistance (April 1942) and established an administrative center and flight path. In February 1944, the US and Australian forces embarked on a six-week campaign to retake the island of Manus, which was achieved on May 18, 1944.

The Americans expanded the Japanese base and built a large naval base in nearby Lombrum ; in Momote a flight path was established on which heavy bombers could take off. It was from here that the invasion of the Philippines started.

After the war, the base was demolished and all equipment was bulldozed into pits or docks.
