Culture and sights

Like Mount Hagen, Goroka is the starting point for tourists traveling further into the highlands , most of whom are flown in by plane.

Both cities host the annual Highland Shows . These were originally peaceful meetings (sing-sing) of cultural groups, some of which were far away, which, among other things, served to get to know each other and to which the colonial administration invited various ethnic groups to perform dances and songs in traditional costumes. The first Highland Show , or Eastern Highlands Agricultural Show , actually took place in 1956. Several hundred settlers and 10,000 highland residents took part. This first show was only a kind of test run, which pursued the goal of passing on information about agriculture and the promotion of cattle breeding to the highlands, but also local handicrafts were exhibited. The second show, which took place on June 15 and 16, 1957, already included the performance of indigenous dances and chants as part of a competition, which the Asaro Mudmen could win. This second Highlands Show also attracted thousands of visitors. Soon the competition became the most important part of the show, the dances became more innovative and impressive. There was also a mixing and lively exchange of traditions among the various groups. Today the show is famous for its spectacular displays of dance, music and other arts and a popular tourist attraction, which takes place alternately in Goroka and Mount Hagen. It also presents the cultural diversity in the New Guinea highlands.

The Goroka Show takes place on the weekend before or after Independence Day on September 16 each year.

Another attraction for the tourists who have flown in are the Asaro Mudmen and their performances.
